The beginning of mountain tourism
Contrary to what you might think, it wasn’t the myth of mountain sports that drew the first tourists to visit our alpine locations.
In fact, thermal springs contributed to the fame of some unknown but splendid locations amongst mountains, lakes and enchanting landscapes and, little by little, hotels, casinos and a wide variety of tourist and sport facilities have appeared. The alpine locations surrounding Mont Blanc have been famous for their waters since the 17th century: aristocrats and leading lights chose to spend their holidays in Evian and Courmayeur, contributing to the growth of tourism.
Thermal spas are essentially based on water virtues: this new booming tourism is linked to the water cures, enhanced by the pleasure of the “remise-en-forme” and the discovery of the wellbeing holiday.
